The Story Behind Algeria’s First National BSides Event

Proof That Limits Are Lies: My BSides Journey

Some journeys define who we are.
This is the story of how I turned long commutes, exhaustion, and obstacles into a limitless adventure — becoming part of the team that organized Algeria’s first national BSides cybersecurity event.

💡 BSides is a global, community-driven conference where students, researchers, and professionals share knowledge, tackle real-world challenges, and empower each other to push boundaries.

Starting from the Ground Up

At the time, I was a student at Mouloud Mammeri University, Bastos campus. Every Thursday, I embarked on a journey that tested my perseverance:

  • Bus from campus to Thénia
  • Train from Thénia to Oued Smar
  • Cybersecurity meetings at ESI

No one knew about these weekly trips — not friends, not classmates, maybe only my parents on the day of the event 😅. I kept pushing, because limits are meant to be broken.

Organizing the First National BSides

I had the honor of joining the organizing team of the first BSides event at the national level. It wasn’t just about planning a conference — it was about empowering a community, sharing knowledge, and proving that persistence pays off.

During the event, we explored OWASP, a global authority on web application security, known for its OWASP Top 10 list of critical vulnerabilities. It was inspiring to see how knowledge transforms obstacles into opportunities.

Lessons from OWASP

  • Secure coding is essential
  • Awareness of web vulnerabilities can save millions
  • Collaboration builds stronger, safer systems
  • Every challenge is a chance to learn

The Hardest Part: Pushing Through the Return Journey

Ironically, the toughest challenge wasn’t organizing the event — it was the way back home:

  • Crowded buses and trains
  • People pushing, shoving, chaos
  • Exhaustion at the end of a long day

In Algeria, public transport doesn’t always consider those with difficulties, but I learned to persist, to stand tall, and to embrace challenges. Every struggle became fuel for determination 😅.

Turning Struggles into Strength

This experience taught me more than cybersecurity skills:

  • Discipline: keeping up with weekly trips and meetings
  • Leadership: organizing and guiding a national event
  • Teamwork: collaborating with peers to achieve a goal
  • Resilience: facing obstacles without letting them define me

Final Thoughts

Limits are illusions. Challenges are stepping stones.
Through BSides, I discovered that determination, consistency, and passion can overcome any obstacle.

To anyone facing difficulties: your struggle is your strength. Keep moving forward, and you too can achieve the extraordinary.
